Despite the attempted coup, despite the violence, fascism, and planned massacre of legislators, something good happened in America recently. Raphael Warnock — pastor of MLK’s former church — won a Senate seat in Georgia. That’s excellent news for Americans of all stripes, even the American Idiots who don’t know it. Even the fascists who attempted to overthrow democracy. I want to take a few moments to discuss why. Just how broken is American politics?

What Warnock’s win has done is raise the possibility of American politics “moving further to the left.” You’ll hear that line over and over again from pundits. That’s true, but only in the way, that, say “Donald Trump is not a nice person” is true. It doesn’t quite get you very far in terms of understanding.

American politics is broken because it’s centre is so far off balance the entire country plunged into an abyss of chaos, fascism, hate, stupidity, and indifference. It is the reason Trump’s fascism was allowed to escalate to the point that he incited a violent coup. That’s what an imbalanced political centre does: it pushes countries off the cliffs of ruin, by way of extremism, fanaticism, violence, and ignorance, being legitimized, normalized, empowered.

How did that happen? Because America is one of the only countries in the world — in history, in fact — which has ever had two fanatically right parties monopolistically vying for power. Which ones do I mean? Why, the Democrats and Republicans of course. You know the Republicans are hard right by now. But so are the Dems, in global terms.

Hence, because America’s one of the only countries ever to have two fanatically hard right conservative parties contesting each other for power, the center of American politics grew badly, fatally imbalanced. And with an imbalanced center, a country topples into collapse, keeling over due to the weight of its own stupidity, fanaticism, rage, and ignorance.

Now, the Republicans are so far right that it’s up there — according to scholars — with the world’s authoritarian and fascist parties, as if the last four years weren’t evidence…
