It might not seem that way right about now, but the Ukrainians are winning. The Kremlin’s done something unusual — which is announced an end to hostilites “in the foreseeable future.” They’ve given up on capturing Kyiv. And they’ve admitted a “tragic” number of casualties. One of those alone might be Maskirovka, Russia’s way of war by deception — but all three? They’re a sign that Russia finally knows it’s losing.

And this, unfortunately, is Russia’s way of losing. Horror. Crimes against humanity. Scorched earth, indifferent to civilian casualties — like yesterday’s gruesome attack on a train station, leaving scores of innocents dead. Russia’s approach is: if we can’t win, we’re going to destroy everything on our way out. All of that should rightly make you shudder — what monstrosity is this?

Yet the glimmer of hope is there. The Ukrainians — for now — are winning. But what about the rest of us? Have we learned anything from their determination — and from Russia’s malignancy?
