Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder and one of the most celebrated industry experts in the crypto world, has shared his latest vision and strategies for the Ethereum Network’s association with modern artificial intelligence (AI) technology. He suggests that Ethereum’s close association with artificial intelligence could strengthen markets and enhance financial security. He outlined his broader vision and highlighted the leap in modern technology through an X post on Monday. According to him, the future of AI lies in empowering humanity, enhancing human capabilities rather than replacing them. He also mentioned his previous post, which explains the promise and challenges of crypto + AI applications, posted in January 2024.
His X post on Monday reflects that he prefers a more directed and positive approach that incorporates Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) technology with decentralized principles to establish an ideal environment and promote human freedom. Buterin commented that, to him, Ethereum and his personal vision for how civilization should approach artificial general intelligence are fundamentally about choosing a positive direction, rather than simply embracing unchecked or undifferentiated acceleration. He added that he believes it is important to integrate perspectives from both crypto and artificial intelligence.
He also discusses an AI future he dreams of, or he wants, and that future should be the one which we foster human freedom and empowerment. He stated that he wants an AI-driven future in which human freedom and empowerment are preserved, avoiding scenarios where humans are either sidelined into irrelevance by AIs or permanently stripped of power by entrenched human power structures that become impossible to overcome. He also emphasized that such a future must ensure the world does not descend into catastrophic outcomes, whether from classic superintelligent AI doomsday scenarios or more chaotic situations where offensive capabilities outpace defensive ones.
Buterin Outlines Four Short-Term Directions for Ethereum’s Role in AI Integration

In his updated perspective, Buterin emphasizes Ethereum’s crucial role in integrating AGI technology into the sector. He proposed four key short-term building directions and the inevitable role Ethereum plays in them.
In the first proposal, he outlines plans to develop tools that enable more trustless and private interactions with AI, structured across several key areas. He stated that this vision includes local large language model tooling, zero-knowledge payments for API calls that allow users to access remote models without linking their identity across requests, ongoing work on cryptographic methods to enhance AI privacy, and client-side verification of cryptographic proofs, trusted execution environment attestations, and other forms of server-side assurance.
The second proposition is all about making Ethereum into an economic coordination layer for AI-related interactions. He shared that Ethereum’s role as an economic layer for AI-related interactions encompasses API calls, bots hiring other bots, security deposits, and potentially more complex mechanisms such as on-chain dispute resolution and ERC-8004-based AI reputation systems.
Third is making the cypherpunk “mountain man” vision a reality. This will enable the users to directly interact with Ethereum applications via local models. According to him, it also allows users to have a local model propose transactions independently, verify transactions generated by decentralized application interfaces, perform local smart contract auditing, receive assistance in interpreting the meaning of formal verification proofs provided by others, and verify the trust models of applications and protocols.
Fourth and final proposal points out that by using AI, the scale of human judgement and collaboration can be expanded. While discussing the fourth point, he explained that prediction and decision markets, decentralized governance, quadratic voting, combinatorial auctions, universal barter economies, and similar theoretical constructions are elegant in theory but have been severely limited in practice by constraints on human attention and decision-making capacity. He added that large language models remove this limitation by greatly scaling human judgment, making it possible to revisit and potentially implement those ideas more effectively.
Buterin concluded that these are all areas where Ethereum can help turn theory into reality, stating that it is possible to revisit the best ideas from 2014 while building many new and improved ones on top. He added that, with artificial intelligence and zero-knowledge technologies, there is now an entirely new set of tools available to bring those ideas to life.
