TSLA Stock News: Elon Musk Says Tesla Could Build First Humanoid AGI

Tesla, Inc. CEO Elon Musk has declared that his company will be among the first to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and could be the first to achieve the milestone in a physical, “humanoid or atom-shaping form.” Musk shared this optimistic outlook for the company’s future in a post on X, the social media platform he owns.

Following his latest statement, Musk has signaled that his electric vehicle manufacturing company is now at the forefront of a race to develop AGI, alongside industry leaders such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.

Beyond Software: Musk’s “Atom-Shaping” AGI Vision

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is currently a hypothetical form of AI designed to surpass human intelligence and capabilities across various fields. Rather than focusing on one specific task, such as driving or content generation, AGI would be capable of general-purpose problem-solving across all domains.

Musk has introduced the term “atom-shaping” to describe his vision for the AGI humanoids. While firms like OpenAI and Google are primarily developing intelligence for the digital realm, Tesla is aiming to develop a physical AGI capable of interacting with the material world.

Tesla is currently developing its general-purpose robotic humanoid, Optimus, and is preparing to unveil the “Gen 3” iteration in the first quarter of 2026. Musk’s goal for developing the first Humanoid AGI is achievable, as Tesla is currently manufacturing humanoids on a large scale. He has previously shared that Tesla intends to scale production to reach one million Optimus units annually.

The Optimus Robot and the AGI Bet

Elon Musk’s recent statements regarding AGI-powered humanoids are not merely rhetorical; they represent a fundamental shift in Tesla’s operational focus. His vision centers on the Optimus Robot, which is currently being developed at Tesla’s Fremont facility in California. Following the expected unveiling of the “Optimus Gen 3” in the first quarter of 2026, the robot is projected to go on public sale by the end of 2027. Unlike its predecessors, the Gen 3 iteration is described as the first version engineered specifically for mass manufacturing rather than demonstration.

The robot is expected to handle a diverse range of industrial tasks and household chores, as its neural networks are trained using real-world physical data captured by millions of Tesla vehicles. Unlike the standard AI models that use digital text to learn, Optimus utilizes the data collected from various complex environments across the globe.

Currently, these robots are already operational within Tesla’s own factories, providing a live feedback loop that allows engineers to refine both the hardware and machine-learning systems in a controlled setting. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the humanoids will be integrated with xAI’s Grok models, providing the robots with the advanced cognitive reasoning and voice interaction necessary for complex human environments.

Financing the Future of Humanoid AI

To support this transformation, Tesla has dramatically increased its capital expenditure, projecting a $20 billion investment in 2026 alone, more than double its spending from the previous year. While Tesla has not specified the exact percentage of this fund dedicated to Optimus, the company confirmed the capital is being distributed across six key factories to scale production of robots. This massive financial commitment underscores Tesla’s dedication to Musk’s vision to build the first humanoid AGI.
